Social Project: International Coastal Clean-Up Day (ICCYMY)

In both September and October of 2023, Yayasan Kossan signed up to become one of the platinum sponsors of the International Coastal Clean-Up Day (ICCMY) Project 2023, a collaboration project between Yayasan Kossan and the Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Kraken Scuba Diving Club (UTP SCUBA Diving Club) together with UTP Kembara and Rekreasi Ramblers. This nationwide event is held annually every September in an effort to clean up the local beaches of Malaysia.

From 29th September to 2nd October, 52 volunteers who were UTP students and Sea Voice Divers were gathered at Pulau Perhentian Kecil in Terengganu for the clean-up activities. Together, they were able to collect 172kg rubbish from the land and 37.5kg rubbish from debris which they collected from dives into the water. To give you a picture, the rubbish collected is equivalent to the average weight of a baby elephant when it is born! Imagine just how much rubbish was collected from this one location alone!

We thank the volunteers and praise them for their willingness to dirty their hands to clean the chosen beach for this year’s event. We truly hope to target more beaches and round up more volunteers for next year. Not only that, we hope that this will inspire other groups and volunteers to conduct similar activities year-round.
