Social Project: Adopt A Friend: Collaboration with Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW)

(August 2023)

We are proud to announce that Yayasan Kossan has adopted 8 green sea turtles, 2 Hawksbill turtles, 5 turtle nests, and 10 corals in collaboration with the Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW).

Green sea turtles are not only endangered; they are also one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivores of the species. The eight green sea turtles we adopted are called Amo, Sari, Jules, Mica, Tsuki, Cinnamon, Maia, and Meena.

On the other hand, Hawksbill turtles are named for their curved, beak-like mouths which are specially adapted to forage around coral reefs, as they largely feed on fast-growing sponges and sea anemones. Hence, preservation of corals is vitally important as part of the conservation efforts of critically endangered species like the Hawksbill turtles. The two we adopted are called Helang and Jude.

One unique fact about turtles is that they do not have sex chromosomes. Instead, the sex of a turtle is determined by the temperature of eggs in the first two thirds of the incubation period. Our adopted turtle nests are named as follows:

UNIQUE

home to 82 eggs that was bought from local tender located at Tanjung Batu Beach on 4th July 2023

JOYFUL

home to 63 eggs that was bought from local tender located at Kijal on 16th July 2023

COOL

home to 91 eggs that was bought from local tender located at Kijal on 4th July 2023

PEACEFUL

home to 107 eggs that was bought from local tender located at Kuala Abang on 6th August 2023

LOVELY

home to 102 eggs that was bought from local tender located at Tahu Tiga on 1st August 2023

We hope that the adoption of the turtles, nests and corals will help support the entire ecosystem to preserve these endangered species.
