The global Covid pandemic had gripping impact over the livelihoods of many, hitting hardest especially to lower income families.

After one and a half year of battling the spread of Covid-19 with pro-longed lock downs, by end June 2021, many Malaysians had reached their threshold and raised white flags signaling distress and struggle to put food on the table; mainly resulted from job losses and slashed income.

During this crucial period, Yayasan Kossan (YK) together with Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd (KRI) and its global business partners initiated United to Nourish programme. United to Nourish literally as named, is encouraging unification in pooling resources to help the community (Bersatu demi masyarakat) by providing essential items, primarily food to B40 families and the surrounding communities in need. We received generous contributions from KRI and its global business partners amounting to RM1,027,450.81 and prepared 10,000 units of food baskets. We worked with Selangor & Perak Social Welfare Department to identify and distribute at least 5000 units of food baskets to the B40 families within 11 districts of Selangor and 5 districts of Perak. We had also arranged distributions to 37 welfare homes from orphanages to old folks and special care homes.

We applaud our team members and volunteers for their great efforts; which was made twice harder due to the movement control order and during the time of uncertainty with infection rates at peak; for them to reach out to the communities and arranged the successful distributions of all the food baskets to reach 10,677 beneficiaries in totality. We are thankful towards all from these organizations that have shown great compassion and care to lend a hand and bringing hope to the struggling Malaysians. It is heart warming to receive not just the monetary support but also sincere words of encouragement from the generous donors to Malaysians to stay strong and to build resilience over adversity.

YK DONATIONS TO ANIMAL SHELTERS

Not forgetting our little friends during the difficult times of pandemic outbreak, YK has allocated RM30,000 as donation in kind to a few animal shelters in the vicinity. We have taken the initiative to check out the condition of a few animal shelters to understand their needs. These shelters too are very much impacted by the pro-longed lock downs due to pandemic outbreak; which hindered funds collection normally raised through events and campaigns. Even the quantum of donations were reduced due to overall slow down of economy. YK has sponsored pet food, purchased medications from veterinary clinics and donated cleaning materials, all being the few essential items needed by the shelters.

FURRY FRIENDS FARM

Furry Friends Farm being the home to over 500 abandoned, abused and neglected animals. Furry Friends Farm practices No-kill Policy to all species living and sharing its home within the perimeter of the sanctuary. While 350 dogs live in huge enclosures & let run on rotation basis, the 150 cats live in the cattery and have their own outdoor garden. Furry Friends Farm normally organizes events and campaigns to raise funds to support the sustainability of the sanctuary.

This is Macho and he is now 15 years old. After recovering from stroke in 2021, Macho has continuously experienced more complications due to aging. His paw is diagnosed with cancer and is at terminal stage. The sanctuary referred him to their panel veterinary clinic and Macho is currently on medications such as moringa and steroid for pain management. Caregivers try their best to provide better comfort to Macho and make his final days more pleasant.

Macho is rescued in 2009 from Pulau Segat Kering. He has been in a mess and is extremely timid in presence of human. He is named Macho with hope to instill the quality of the name into his personality. Today, although he is still jumpy in front of strangers, he has however shown better acceptance under the careful care and attention provided by the sanctuary caregivers. The shelter would not put up Macho nor those animals that needed special care, for normal adoption as they hope to provide them with stability and avoid unnecessary change of environment that may trigger emotional distress.

The shelter hopes to be able to nurse back the health of these sickly souls prior readying them for adoptions. While those that are not ready for adoption and still needed care, they would keep them at the sanctuary for them to live as peacefully possible till the end of live.

Lil Henry Heng has been the darling in the shelter. Albeit having only one good eye, he never let it become an obstacle in his search for adventure. He is super smart and fearless in exploring the surrounding around him; like a little explorer. He is very active and not at all intimidated by the rest of the animals even those larger in size around him.

He has his fair share of anxiety moment at times but he can be easily comforted once he sense no danger or harm surrounding him. Smart as he is, he is easily bought over due to his foodie nature. He has always been quiet in his little exploration and you can hardly hear his voice. We hope that he will never experience breach of trust and to remain his simple trustful nature to grow into a fine and independent guy. Lil Henry has been adopted by one of the caregivers that is able to provide him the special care needed and now he is waiting for his eye surgery.
